The capital city of the newly formed stat of Telangana in South India, Hyderabad is a thriving city best known for its thriving IT scene. Historically speaking, this city offers some charming amalgamations of Islamic culture as well as South India Hindu Culture.

Activities

Guided tour of Hyderabad include the Mecca Masjid Mosque built by Sultan Abdulla Qutb Shah, Char Minar which dates from the early 17th Century, Lad Bazaar and Salar Jung Museum. Also visit Golconda Fort - one of the most impressive citadels in India, nearly 700 years old and site of the diamond vault which once held the Koh-i-noor and Hope diamonds.

 

Bijapur (2 nights)

The foundations of this historic city were laid during the reign of the Chalukyan Dynasty. They called it 'Vijayapura' or the 'City of Victory' from where comes its present name Vijaypura (Bijapur). This one-time capital of the Adil Shahi kings (1489-1686) is dotted with mosques, mausoleums, palaces, fortifications, watchtowers, and strong gateways, with the massive Gol Gumbaz, India's largest dome, dominating the landscape for miles around. Vijaypura (Bijapur) experienced a great burst of architectural activity under the Adil Shahi rulers. It is also famous for the hand-made sarees of llkal. Vijaypura (Bijapur) is also the best base from where to reach other exceptional heritage sites such as Aihole, Badami and Pattadakal.

Located in a valley of rugged red sandstone, surrounding the Agastya Lake, Badami is an archaeological delight owing to its beautifully crafted sandstone cave temples, fortresses and carvings. It is home to a number of examples of Dravidian architecture which sustains and enhances instances of both South and North Indian style of architecture. One can see silent imprints that history has left behind all around the area

Activities

Badami also known as Vatapi, is rich with Hindu and Jain temples carved out of sandstone hills. An excursion to visit the elaborate temples at Aihole and Pattadakal.

 

Hampi (3 nights)

Considered to be one of the most famed tourist destinations in the state of Karnataka, Hampi was once the seat of the Vijayanagara Empire, the largest one in post-mogul India. The empire covered several states and left behind a legacy through gorgeous temples and structures.

Activities

Over the next two days visit the exceptional ruins of the Vijayanagar Empire at Hampi - one of the largest Hindu empires ever to have existed in Indian history. Evidence of the city's greatness is still very noticeable - the Vittala Temple, the stone chariot, Lotus Mahal and Queen's Bath remains intact along with a plethora of other buildings, ruins and paved causeways.

 

Belur and Halebid (2 nights)

Belur and Halebid

Located right in the heart of the Hoysala Empire, the remote sites of Halebid and Belur come with a 900 year old legacy of Hindu art and sculptures. With gorgeous temple facades and intricate carvings that adorn the pillars and walls of this temple, visiting these sites is an excellent way to delve deep into the stories from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

Activities

Visit one of the most important Jain pilgrimage centre Shravanbelagola. The world's tallest monolithic statue 27m. high monolith of Lord Bahubali is situated here. Also, explore Helebid and Belur temples.

 

Mysore (2 nights)

Mysore

Mysore or Mysuru was the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore since 1399 up to the year 1947. The city boasts of tropical savanna climate and extends over a land mass of 128.42 square kilometers. It is commonly known as the ‘Cultural capital of South Karnataka’ and is renowned for the Mysore style of painting. The Folk Lore Museum, Sand Sculpture Museum and the Regional Museum of Natural History attract a spate of visitors who enjoy exploring the exhibits that represent the city’s rich culture.

Activities

Visit the City Palace, one of the largest in India, built by Henry Irwin in 1897 and Chamundi Hill to view the Chamundeswari Temple and the famous Nandi Bull. Also drive out of the city to Somnathpur to see the exquisite Keshava Vishnu temple constructed by the Hoysalas in 1268 and the ruins of Tipu Sultan's capital at Srirangapatnam.
